IWASA 2025: Exploring the evolving landscape of digitalisation in water management

On 23-24 January 2025, the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources Management at RWTH Aachen University held their annual International Hydraulic Engineering Symposium Aachen (IWASA). This event is a key gathering for civil engineers and others interested in these fields, featuring lectures from renowned speakers on relevant topics.

The 55th IWASA brought together experts and participants to explore the evolving landscape of digitalisation in water management. As digital technologies increasingly permeate our daily lives, they unlock remarkable potential for improving water management practices.

Hosted by Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Holger Schüttrumpf at the Forum M in Aachen, the hybrid format attracted more than 700 attendees both in-person and via a live stream on YouTube. The event featured presentations from leading figures in both scientific research and practical applications, showcasing innovative strategies for smart water management, advanced data analysis, and the incorporation of artificial intelligence. Attendees engaged in meaningful discussions about the accompanying challenges, opportunities, and risks associated with these emerging tools.

In addition to the dynamic presentations, the event provided ample opportunities for networking and exchanging best practices during coffee and lunch breaks. Participants also had the chance to connect further during a social gathering at the IWW hydraulic lab on Thursday evening, fostering a sense of community among the attendees.

With RWTH Aachen University being a research partner in the JCAR ATRACE programme, this event served as a valuable platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration.
