The Benelux region is intersected by several transboundary regional rivers. These rivers play a crucial role in the socio-economic and environmental landscape of the region, as a potential source of flooding, but also serving as vital waterways for drinking water, transportation, agriculture, and industries. However, their transboundary nature presents challenges in terms of water management, as actions taken upstream can have significant impacts downstream, and the other way around.
Collaborative efforts between the countries are essential to address issues such as flood and drought management along these shared river basins. Through joint studies, coordinated monitoring, and mutual cooperation, we strive to support the sustainable management of these transboundary river basins, ensuring the well-being of both people and the environment across national borders.
JCAR ATRACE initiates its research on 21 regional river basins, located in 4 neighbouring countries. The basins are home to 7 million inhabitants. Over the course of this project, more basins will be added to this list and the map, based on upcoming research requests.
