Last month, we held our second in-person Scientific Programme Council meeting hosted by RWTH Aachen University.
Our Scientific Programme Council comprises experts from each of our 9 European research partners, all with experience in the selected river basins and flood and expertise in the field of flood and drought risk management and policy management. It is pivotal in steering and executing our comprehensive programme as it coordinates the activities and outputs within the scope of JCAR ATRACE.
During the meeting, we had in-depth discussions and engaged in strategic planning focused on our upcoming research initiatives. Guided by the useful ‘Theory of Change’ framework, we thoroughly examined our research focus and its relation to the current activities. These discussions were important in ensuring that our current efforts are aligned with our overarching goal of supporting risk management and strengthening adaptation measures and policies in a transboundary context.
We also took the opportunity to reflect on the impacts and lessons learned from the extreme climate events in 2024 and how such events influence our programme. Examples included Germany's Saarland flooding this May and the more recent flooding in Bavaria in June. Our experts provided general observations and insights on hydrology analysis, soil saturation, and transboundary issues among others.
